cornered

Hon. CA WALLACE (Thuringowa—ALP) (Minister for Natural Resources and Water and Minister Assisting the Premier in North Queensland) (10.05 am): I am pleased to inform the House today of Queensland’s newest officially named location. Queensland already has a number of ‘corners’ where our border meets the borders of New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

[…]

Up until today, Gregory and Greaves Corner was the only ‘corner’ on the state boundary yet to be named. The official name change, which I approved yesterday, has been welcomed by the local community, especially as the name has such significant local historical value. This name acknowledges the contributions of two surveyors—

Mr SPEAKER: Order! Excuse me, Minister. There is far too much audible conversation in the House. Can we give the minister a fair go.

Mr WALLACE: Thank you, Mr Speaker. I thought they would have been more interested in some of our early pioneers in Queensland. Obviously they are not.

A government member: They hate the west.

Mr WALLACE: They hate the west; that is right. This name acknowledges the contributions of two surveyors—Queensland’s Sir Augustus Charles Gregory and New South Wales’s William Albert Braylesford Greaves.

Mr Johnson: A great electorate named after him, too.

Mr WALLACE: Yes, exactly—a good seat named after him, and I believe the member for Gregory’s middle name.

Mr Johnson: A great member, too.

Mr WALLACE: A great member. I will take that interjection from the member for Gregory.

Mr SPEAKER: A great ego, too.
