Western Australia Day

4 June, 2012

Today is the first ‘Western Australia Day’ public holiday here in Western Australia, following the renaming of Foundation Day earlier this year. The change had previously been floated in 2008, introduced as a Private Members Bill by the then-Leader of the Opposition Colin Barnett, before disappearing after the state election a few months later.

Previous posts have covered the debate surrounding the 2011/2012 bill in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council, and are listed below; as with the Cat Bill 2011, there were many personal stories featured within these debates, which have not been featured here, but you can read through the full transcripts and the text of the bill through the Parliament of Western Australia website.

Legislative Assembly (20/03/12):
missed out
off to the races

Legislative Council (27/03/12):
at the scene

Legislative Council (28/03/12):
today’s lesson
starter for ten
call it a day
