introducing hansardku

Our good friend Grahame, @angrygoat on Twitter, yesterday unveiled a wonderful new Hansard project: Hansardku, which parses the XML files of the federal Hansard, both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and finds blocks of text which match the syllable structure of a haiku. The results are a mixture of fascinating, funny, weird, topical, irrelevant, disturbing, and often nonsensical, as is the risk of this kind of search – keep going through the results, though, and you hit some pretty fantastic outputs.

There’s a temptation to just keep spending time on Hansardku and endlessly tweet haiku, and despite currently having a couple of dozen Hansardku tabs open, hopefully I’ll resist that (then again, I said I’d avoid starting a blog to post the weird bits of the WA Hansard and that clearly worked out well). However, I’d like to make a weekly series, if possible, of highlights. We’ll see how it goes, anyway.

So, for now, here is the first selection of highlights that we found yesterday, from the Hansard of the Parliament of Australia, in haiku form:
